Essence beauty editor, Nicole Melton's oversized high bun

These pictures of Essence’s beauty editor, Nicole Melton, rocking an oversized rolled bun at one of celebrity makeup artist Alexandra Butler’s makeup classes, some what went viral as naturals marvelled at this simple yet intricate top knot.   397798_10100237296981830_476023718_n

I posted a couple of pictures of Nicole’s bun over on facebook and receive a shed load of enquires about how I thought she acieved it. Although I didn’t have the answers, Nicole yesterday release close up pictures of her famous braid trim bun as well as directing her enquires to a video tutorial on how she achieved the look from start to finish.920317_10100237833057530_34749296_o

She commented..

“My hair is much longer now, so I have to use a black foam donut in the middle so the bun doesn’t sink in. You can get one at the beauty supply store. Also, I used marley hair to create the braided accent at the base. The rest of the bun is all my own hair. I slick my edges with Paul Mitchell Foaming Pomade and Beautiful Textures Leave-In Conditioner. Brush and tie a silk scarf around the edges for about 30 minutes to set the edges nice and sleek. I don’t use any heat whatsoever to create this look. I simply start with dry, stretched hair. Love y’all!”  Check out the hair tutorial, which would work on relaxed hair also, that is posted on the Essence YouTube Channel

“Another view of my famous topknot! See previous pic for detailed instructions…. P.S. I don’t like watermarks but I get soooo many questions on this style! Hopefully if it’s shared this time around, at least folks can use the watermark to find my tutorial and tips more easily. Just trying to be of service to you all, my loves! Xoxo”

Lovely bun, like a queen’s crown. I love it when when natural hairs are very versatile, can go whatever style you want. Although it looks like it takes a lot of time to finish it, I think it’s worth it for special occasions every once in awhile, I will give time for it. Great site!
